Some cities leave a special mark on us, and Coimbra is one of them. To introduce the city through the eyes of someone who truly knows it, we turned to Bรกrbara Cruz, Regional Account & Property Manager at LovelyStay in Lisbon. A Coimbra native, she grew up here and spent much of her life in the city, and she still feels a special bond with it.

A City Between Tradition and Youth

We asked Bรกrbara how she would describe Coimbra to a first-time visitor, and her answer was spot on:

โ€œCoimbra is a city where tradition blends with the youthful energy of its students, and walking through it is like discovering a piece of history on every street.โ€

As for the best time to visit, Bรกrbara says the city is lovely year-round, but a season with mild weather, such as spring, is ideal. The reason is practical: Coimbra has historic streets, plenty of steep climbs and attractions spread across the whole city rather than concentrated in a single area.

Celebrations You Wonโ€™t Forget

If you want to experience Coimbra properly, keep an eye on the calendar. Bรกrbara highlights the Queima das Fitas and the Serenata Monumental, two defining moments of student life. She also recommends the Festas da Rainha Santa Isabel, an important religious celebration in the city.

At the Table in Coimbra

Coimbraโ€™s cuisine is strongly shaped by the Mondego River, which gives us the famous arroz de lampreia (lamprey rice). The surrounding countryside contributes roast kid, chanfana (goat or lamb slow-cooked in red wine) and the renowned Bairrada suckling pig. Rabaรงal cheese is another much-loved regional delicacy, and the wines of Dรฃo, Bairrada and the Beiras pair well with any of these dishes.

Among her local secrets, Bรกrbara points to Zรฉ Manel dos Ossos, a restaurant more than 70 years old that serves typical regional dishes and is known for its ossos cozidos (boiled bones). Then there is Petisqueira Lapas, in Cernache, which she calls a must-go. The menu is regional and built around seasonal produce, and itโ€™s where youโ€™ll find the best arroz de lampreia in the region. Itโ€™s the place she always recommends, and the one everyone keeps going back to.

What Your Itinerary Shouldnโ€™t Miss

For a first visit, Bรกrbara considers four stops or routes essential:

For those seeking something less conventional, her suggestions are just as tempting: visit Conรญmbriga, catch a Coimbra Fado performance, kayak down the Mondego, or explore Penacova and the Livraria do Mondego on a hike.

Memories of a Life in Coimbra

For Bรกrbara, Coimbra is much more than a destination. Her most striking memory is of childhood, spent exploring and playing in the cityโ€™s woodlands, growing up surrounded by nature. Then came her university years, perhaps the time when she lived and explored Coimbra most, making memories all over the city.

Advice from Someone Who Knows

And how do you experience the authentic essence of the region? Bรกrbara doesnโ€™t hesitate:

โ€œLetting yourself get a little lost is the best way to get to know the real Coimbra. Itโ€™s worth discovering the less urban side, the countryside around the city, the people who live there and their stories, because thereโ€™s still a lot of tradition alive in those places.โ€

The Memory That Stays with You

When we asked what feeling she would like visitors to take away, Bรกrbara answered with the tenderness of someone who loves her hometown. Though understated, Coimbra is a beautiful city full of history: of kings and queens, of revolution and freedom, and of a youth that grew into adulthood there. It leaves you with a great deal of nostalgia.

Perhaps that is the best invitation to visit: go with time to spare, let yourself get lost, and come back, as so many do, longing for it.
