This year’s first semester was remarkable for the national tourism sector – be it in terms of overnight stays and guests, be it in income, what reveals Portugal’s booming tourism. This impact was reflected on the main entrance gate in the country for travellers. From January to June, the territory’s airports have dealt with an impressive record of 31 million passengers, versus 24 million in the same period of 2022 (an increase of 28,4%). These numbers represent a 12% increase when compared to the first semester of 2019, as proven in the data provided by the National Institute for Statistics (INE).
“From the beginning of 2023, we have been observing consistent monthly passenger records in the national airports”, emphasises the statistics board.
The recent statistics about air travel highlight the Lisbon Airport, which registered the biggest increase between January and June: +30,9% when compared to 2022 and +8,7% when compared to the first semester of 2019. The Humberto Delgado Airport has the spotlight as leader in the passenger movement in the country, representing an expressive percentage of 50,8%, with a total of 15,9 million passengers. Next were the Porto Airport, with an increase of 28,1% in passenger traffic, and the Faro Airport, with a 20,6% increase.
Given these impressive numbers, it is clear that booming tourism has a vital role in Portugal’s economic perspectives, propelling the hotel industry and related services. The country is still an ideal destination for visitors from all over the world, which reflects the tourism sector’s attraction factor.
