Tourism is finally coming back! After a summer with more open borders and a more heated sector, we can celebrate that slowly everything is getting back to normal. But what are the nationalities of the tourists who most visited Portugal in June, July, and August of this year?
Note that our sample is from LovelyStay’s guest bookings. Since we manage over 400 properties across the country, accounting for over 5,600 bookings during the first three summer months, we can consider it an interesting volume to present in this text. See below!
LovelyStay’s results during June, July, and August were impressive! We talked about it recently. See all the information at the link.
As we have been talking about since last year, domestic tourism is taking an important position in the country’s tourism market. If in the summer of 2020 the volume of bookings for Portuguese tourists was expressive, we can say that this year it was even greater. In June, the Portuguese were the ones who most occupied LovelyStay’s properties around the country. In July and August, local tourists took second and third place in a number of bookings, respectively.

As expected, the French always choose Portugal as their country of choice to enjoy the summer. Followed by our Spanish neighbors and also by the Germans. English tourism, with all the restrictions between borders, had a considerable reduction. Still, within the European continent, we can consider the Dutch, Belgians, and Italians as nationalities of tourists who also visited the country a lot in this period.
Transcontinental tourism is returning more slowly. Many countries were still on Portugal’s red list, as in the case of Brazil which only got on the green list for non-essential travel as of September 1st. Americans, on the other hand, have taken advantage of the border openings, taking up a considerable volume of international bookings – in fact, the company’s largest share when we think of tourists outside the European Union.
As we can see, the nationalities of tourists in the summer between 2020 and 2021 did not fluctuate that much. With all the uncertainties of the moment, domestic and European tourism still account for more than 80% of the company’s bookings in this period.
