Exploring a city with family is always about balancing discovery with pace. It’s important to find activities that interest everyone, spaces where you can take a break, and moments that will stay in your memory. Porto offers all this naturally, with gardens, museums, beaches, and lively streets, providing something for every age.
To help you better explore Porto with your family, we gathered insights from someone who knows and lives the city daily. We spoke with Patrรญcia Cravo, Business Developer at LovelyStay, a mother and resident of Porto since 1997. She shared some practical tips, must-visit places, and advice that make all the difference.

Porto as a Family-Friendly Destination
When we asked Patricia what makes Porto an ideal destination for families with children, her answer was simple:
“Porto is a safe, welcoming city thatโs easy to navigate as a family. Thereโs always somewhere to eat, relax, or simply enjoy the moment. Restaurants and public spaces are accustomed to receiving families, which makes the experience smoother when traveling with children.
Everything is relatively close, making it easy to plan the day. In just a few minutes, you can go from a garden to a museum or from the city to the sea. Thereโs a great mix of outdoor spaces, cultural areas, and activities for different ages.”
Activities for Children
When traveling with family, itโs important to find activities suitable for all ages. We asked Patricia for her favorite activities with kids in Porto:
“For younger children, there are plenty of great options. A stroll through the Crystal Palace Gardens, exploring the Serralves Park, or visiting places like Wonder Sense are excellent choices. Simple activities, like riding the tram, playing at the beach, or visiting playgrounds near the sea, like the Homem do Leme playground, always work well.
For older kids, you can add dynamic experiences like the World of Discoveries or climbing the Arrรกbida Bridge for some exciting views.”

When asked about the best way to explore Porto to ensure everyone enjoys, Patricia advises:
“The most important thing is to balance the pace. Alternating between activities and moments of rest, in a garden or a cafรฉ, helps keep the day light.
Following the kidsโ rhythm makes a difference, as does avoiding the busiest times. Planning the routes in advance is key, especially since Porto has many steep streets.”
Creating Family Memories
To create lasting family memories in Porto, we asked Patricia which places and experiences she recommends the most:
“Some experiences are simple but unforgettable. A tram ride, a rabelo boat tour through the six bridges, or an afternoon in the Crystal Palace Gardens are perfect examples. These moments are quiet but memorable.”
We also asked Patricia what activities she finds particularly special for her and her children:
“It really depends on the time of year. In spring, exploring the gardens and cycling along the coast from Foz to Matosinhos is always a good choice.
On rainy days, places like Guli Park work well to help the kids burn off some energy without depending on the weather.”

Gastronomy and Restaurants
With so many options in Porto, we asked Patricia to share her favourite family-friendly restaurants:
“There are many places that work well with relaxed atmospheres and family-friendly service. Some of my favorites are Varanda da Barra, Treze por Cento, Mercado da Foz, Urbana, Casa Vasco, and Pizzaria Casadoro.
These are places where you can take your time and enjoy a meal, which is important when traveling with kids.”

Practical Tips
Finally, to make the trip as smooth as possible, we asked Patricia for advice for first-time visitors to Porto with kids:
“Bringing a stroller can make a big difference, especially due to the hills. Planning the routes in advance helps avoid unnecessary trips.
Avoiding the busiest times is also one of my top recommendations. Some crowded attractions, like Livraria Lello or the Clerigos Tower, may not be ideal with younger children.
It also makes sense to divide the city into zones and organize your days simply to avoid long walks.”
