Portugal is conquering the hearts of American tourists as never before! According to the last study disclosed by the European Commission for travel, the country has registered an impressive increase of about 79% on the number of arrivals of tourists coming from the United States. This exponential growth is the reflection of the charm and wonders that the country offers, from its rich history to the stunning beauty of its landscapes, without forgetting that direct flights and low fares are also a reason for the attraction of American tourists to Portugal.

In the first trimester of 2023, according to data from Turismo de Portugal, the number of North-american passengers disembarked has increased by 64,7%. There was also an increase of about 107% on overnight stays at tourist accommodations, when compared to the same period last year. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, another place visited by tourists from all over the world, is also getting more and more North-american visitors.

Portugal’s popularity amongst American tourists may be attributed to a variety of attraction factors. Historical cities such as Lisbon and Porto offer an enchanting vision of the past, with cobblestone streets, majestic palaces and picturesque areas. Besides, the wine regions of Douro and Alentejo conquer the most demanding tastes with internationally awarded wines. The stunning beaches of the Algarve and Madeira, which are sunny most of the year, offer unforgettable moments to American tourists looking for relaxation and leisure.

Portuguese gastronomy also plays a crucial role in tourist attraction. With authentic flavours and a rich diversity of regional dishes, Portugal conquers the visitors’ hearths through their stomachs. The famous codfish, the tasty pastéis de nata and the variety of cheese are just some of the delicacies that fill Portuguese tables and make the gastronomic experience unique and unforgettable.

The European Commission for Tourism says that the signs of a new wave of tourists coming from the United States were fundamental to the recovery of European tourism, which has hit 96% of the pre-pandemic levels, and the trend should maintain in the second semester of the year.
