After the many challenges faced in the last two years, Porto was elected the World’s Leading City Destination 2022 on the World Travel Awards – considered to be the “Oscars” of tourism. The ceremony, where the main deciders and relevant persons of the sector gathered, happened last week in Muscat, Oman.
In a statement, Porto’s City Hall has revealed that the city was considered to be the World’s Leading City Destination 2022, surpassing cities such as Acapulco, Cancun and Mazatlan (Mexico), Bogotá (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), Cape Town (South Africa), Nairobi (Kenya), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Las Vegas, Miami and New York (United States of America), Hanoi (Vietnam), Hong Kong (China), Melbourne and Sydney (Australia), Queenstown (New Zealand), London (United Kingdom), Lyon (France), Marrakesh (Morocco) and Lisbon.

This acknowledgement is certainly proof that the city of Porto is ascending on a global level, bringing more and more foreigners to Portugal and stirring up the tourism sector, which could breathe in 2022, after two challenging years.
The Tourism and Internationalisation city councillor of Porto’s City Hall, Catarina Santos Cunha, received the award in the representation of the municipality. Luís Pedro Martins, the president of Porto’s Tourism Association, was also present at the ceremony.
The voting for the World Travel Awards was open to the public until the 20th of October when Porto was elected the World’s Leading City Destination, and they included the whole tourism sector, from hotels to destinations, airlines and tourism operators.
