Can we already kick off the best and hottest season of the year? With a warm Spring and, so far, little rain, the desire of all Portuguese is to enjoy those sunny days with outdoor walks in safety, right? So, we’ve separated 5 places to enjoy in the North of Portugal in the summer. Check them out below:
1- Porto
The capital of the North is definitely the best-known city in the region. And not without reason! Voted 4 consecutive times as the best European destination, Porto is a romantic, charming, festive, and lively city for all ages and audiences. You can walk along the Douro River, enjoy the meeting of the river and the sea, go up and down the immense hills, and end the day with an excellent francesinha and a fine fine wine. Would you enjoy it? Porto is very well located and from there you can visit several other cities in the region.
2- Braga and Guimarães
Recently elected as Best European Destination for 2021, Braga is the capital of Minho and holds a unique architectural wealth. With many churches scattered around the city, a charming historical center and one of the best universities in the country, in Braga, you can find people of all ages. As a neighboring city, we find Guimarães, the first Portuguese capital! The trip to Braga and Guimarães is a classic and can be done in one day. But, of course, to experience a bit more of each place, we advise you to take a round trip from Porto and visit one city per day.

3- Aveiro
Better known as the Portuguese Venice, Aveiro has several rias – canals – which are ideal for moliceiro rides and for romantic walks over their many bridges. Aveiro has a special charm, it has a very beautiful coastline and, for those who like seafood, it is a must-go! Ah, not to mention the traditional ovos moles. Located less than 1h from Porto, the access is very easy, either by car or train.
4- Viana do Castelo
We’ve already talked a lot about Viana do Castelo in a previous article. But of course one of the most important cities of the North of Portugal couldn’t be missing in this text. Viana do Castelo has a huge maritime coast and its beaches are very popular during the summer. Ah! Take a windbreaker! Like all coastal areas in the North, Viana is very windy, even in the Summer.

5- Gerês
Better known as Peneda Gerês National Park, this mountain range is a stunning attraction at all times of the year, but especially in the summer. With waterfalls with crystal clear waters, for those who like adventure and climbing some rocks, hiking, and enjoying nature, this is certainly the place! As it is a huge park, there are several ways to get there. If you really want to get to know the Serra do Gerês in-depth, it takes several days but for a round trip from Porto, the tour certainly won’t disappoint.
